Early Beverly Hills History
The
area Beverly Hills was initially settled by Native Americans, each
rainy season witnessed water being collected in a series of streams and
rivers, which filtered down through the canyons and created a swamp in
the low lands. This swamp was inhabited by flocks of wild geese and
ducks, and became one of the main hunting grounds for the Tongva tribe.

In
the latter half of the 1700s, the Spanish began to arrive and settle
the area. In 1865, the area of Beverly Hills was suspected of having
rich oil deposits buried beneath it. This proved to be a false alarm
but many other settlers, who had arrived, in the hopes of exploiting
this new oilfield, chose to stay.
History of the last 100 Years
In
1906, efforts were made to develop the community of Beverly Hills into
something resembling the form we see today. Tree-lined avenues were
created, which would allow land purchases to build custom homes in
beautifully landscaped surroundings. It was during this time that
Beverly Hills began to attract the rich and famous residents that it
has become so well known for.
During the 1950s, the area saw
some major redevelopment, with much of the land taken up by the
original rumps style stakes, being turned over construction purposes.
The result was something resembling the way we find that Beverly Hills
today.
